To some degree these are quite understandable: when applied professionally and appropriately hypnosis is a very powerful therapeutic tool; its use as a form of entertainment however has inadvertently reinforced fears suggesting loss of control and awareness. This could not be further from the truth!
Hypnotherapy enables individuals to gain control through channelling the power of the mind. In the simplest sense, hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation. Believe it or not, to some degree we have all experienced hypnosis. For example, daydreams, those ethereal moments where we are simply "at one" and perhaps not consciously aware of what is happening around us.
In fact, we are fully aware of everything that is happening, but on a deeper subconscious level. Hypnotherapy is about encouraging this daydream like state to unlock an individual's full potential.
What can I expect from the first appointment?
Hypnotherapy in itself is no more than a tool. As such it must be applied professionally and appropriately. It is therefore generally used in conjunction with a period of Counselling and/or psychotherapy and NLP (see section under Counselling and Psychotherapy). As such it may not always be appropriate to use hypnotherapy in the first session. It is of course of vital importance you as a client feel comfortable with your therapist and the process involved.
During hypnosis, you will be aware of everything happening and going on around you. What is different is that some awareness will be experienced more productively on a deeper subconscious level. At all times you are in complete control. Despite speculation to the contrary, no individual can be made to perform any action against their will.
From the very first time you experience hypnotherapy you will find you are able to relax more easily helping you deal with issues affecting your life in a positive, constructive way.
